Nine Years of Friendship Bears Fruit: Susumu's Salvation Story

We are excited to share a beautiful testimony that showcases the amazing work God is doing through On The Mission (OTM) in Japan. About nine years ago, I met a man named Susumu in Tokyo. He was my Airbnb host, and from the moment we met, a strong friendship was formed. I still remember our first interaction vividly – he met me late at night at the train station, something no one else had ever done for me.

The following days were filled with basketball training at various gyms, each about two miles apart. Susumu tirelessly accompanied me, encouraging me to push my limits. Whenever I felt exhausted, he would remind me of my goal to be the best basketball trainer in Japan. His words, though I had never explicitly mentioned my aspirations, were a source of great motivation.

During that trip, I had the chance to share the gospel with Susumu. Although he initially expressed a dislike for Christians, stemming from his experiences with his parents, who were Christians, our friendship continued to grow. Over the years, Susumu and I shared many wonderful experiences – dinners, local festivals, blueberry picking, our wedding, and countless other activities. His kindness and generosity were always evident, and he formed a special bond with our OTM staff.

Throughout our friendship, I prayed for Susumu and his family and business. Despite his initial reservations, he began to encounter more Christians through his Airbnb business. These interactions were positive and transformative, changing his perception of Christians entirely.

As I planned another trip to Japan, I felt a renewed sense of hope for Susumu. A Christian friend with a media company invited us to his office for a time of prayer and worship. I invited Susumu, feeling that it would be a meaningful experience for him. Despite some initial uncertainty, he joined us and felt a profound sense of peace and comfort during our worship time. When he asked about this feeling, I shared that it was the Holy Spirit at work.

This led to a deeper conversation about God, and Susumu expressed a desire to learn more. We invited him to a worship and prayer night at New Hope Tokyo, where he chose to bring his entire family. That Friday night, we were joined by our friends Pastor Toru and his wife Kozue, who shared the gospel with Susumu. When asked if he believed and wanted to receive Christ, Susumu said yes.

After nine years of friendship and witnessing, Susumu gave his life to Christ. Our joy and gratitude are beyond words. This past Sunday, he attended New Hope Narimasu, a church closer to his home. Please join us in praying for Susumu as he embarks on this new journey with God. Praise God for His unwavering faithfulness!

Thank you for your continued support and prayers. Your generosity is making a profound impact, and stories like Susumu's are a testament to God's amazing grace and love.
